Is six hours of wedding photography enough?

Six hours can cover the heart of a wedding: the last part of getting ready, the ceremony, portraits and the early reception. It works best when the important moments fit within one continuous window and you are comfortable choosing which parts of the day to photograph.

It is less likely to fit if you want coverage from early-morning preparations through a late-night exit, or if you are moving between several locations. The right question is not how long a wedding “should” take. It is what you want to remember in photographs.

Start with three must-have moments.

Write down the moments you would most regret missing. They might be a parent helping you dress, your ceremony and the first dance. Put their expected times on paper. Then add travel, family portraits and a little breathing room. If the first and last moments already sit more than six hours apart, the schedule needs a change or you should discuss longer coverage.

A six-hour example: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This is an illustrative schedule for one venue, a 4 p.m. ceremony and some portraits beforehand. It is not a promise that every wedding will fit these times.

  1. 2–2:45 p.m.: Final getting-ready moments and details.
  2. 2:45–3:30 p.m.: A first look and couple or wedding-party portraits, if you want them.
  3. 3:30–4 p.m.: A pause before the ceremony; arriving guests and final preparations.
  4. 4–4:30 p.m.: Ceremony.
  5. 4:30–5:15 p.m.: Family photographs and remaining portraits.
  6. 5:15–6 p.m.: Reception entrance, room details and the beginning of dinner.
  7. 6–7 p.m.: Dinner, toasts and first dances, arranged with your venue and other vendors.
  8. 7–8 p.m.: Dancing, candid moments and any planned cake cutting.

This example leaves out most of the morning and anything after 8 p.m. If your first dance is scheduled for 8:30, it will not fall inside this coverage window. Move the photography start time or discuss additional coverage rather than hoping the timeline will stretch.

What changes the calculation?

A ceremony and reception at different addresses need a realistic travel allowance. A large family list takes more coordination than a few small groups. If you prefer to see each other for the first time at the ceremony, move couple portraits afterward and allow for that in the reception schedule.

Check daylight for your actual date, too. Our Raleigh wedding season guide helps you consider outdoor portraits, while our rain-plan guide explains how to keep a backup practical.
